Your roof is one of the most essential elements on your home. Without a sound roof, your home is susceptible to all types of damage when heavy rain, wind and hail storms come through our area. That’s why you should make sure whomever you choose to repair or replace your roofing system is a professional roofer.
But What “Professional Roofer” Mean?
Sadly, anyone can claim to be a professional roofer. It’s a term many companies use. It’s up to you to do your due diligence to make sure that the company you’re hiring really is a professional roofer. Here’s what it should mean.
A professional roofer should have:
- Passed the state licensing exam
- Experience in the type of roofing you’re interested in or already have
- Proper liability and workman’s compensation insurance
- Training from the manufacturers who they sell and install
- A strong reputation in the community
Although most companies who refer to themselves as professional roofers have at least one of these qualifications, it’s important that you choose a company who has all of them. Your roof is one of the most important elements of your home and if you choose a company who is less than qualified to work on it, you could have big issues down the road.
How to Check
Most people start with a website. That’s a great place to learn about a business and their services but not an unbiased one. If you feel that their website indicates they’re a company you may want to work with, check with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB has unbiased information about complaints against the company. If you can’t find a listing with the BBB, the so called professional roofer you’re considering may not have been in business very long or may have recently changed names due to issues with their reputation.
You can also check Google and Facebook for reviews. Although a business can respond to reviews on those sites, they can’t delete them or alter them. You can also search the manufacturer’s site to make sure the roofer has the certification they’re claiming. Once you meet with them, request their insurance information if they’re a serious contender. Then call their agent to verify coverage.
