After the unwelcome arrival of a major storm like Florence comes another unwanted type of visitors, storm chasers. Storm chasers are sometimes legitimate roofing companies form other areas and sometimes scam artists without a second of roofing experience. Either way, be very careful with whomever you choose as your roof repair company.
Tips to Help You Hire a Reputable Roof Repair Company
Just because someone has a business card that says they’re a Triad roofer doesn’t mean they are one. You need to make sure they really are a local roofing company by doing a few simple checks.
- Check the Better Business Bureau. In order to be an accredited member, the company needs to have been in operation in the area for at least one year. So don’t just look for a member, look for an accredited member (with a good rating).
- Local references are important. If a roof repair company can say that they service the area and give you the names or point out some homes in your neighborhood that they’ve repaired or performed a roof replacement on in the past year, they’re local.
- Liability and workman’s compensation insurance is essential. Many of these storm chasers will have a certificate that looks good but isn’t real. You are within your rights to ask to see the insurance certificate and call the broker listed to make sure it’s an active policy.
Some jobs require pulling a permit from the local government office. If the roofing company you’re considering isn’t licensed, they won’t be able to pull a permit. Should they try to do the work without a permit, you can be fined by your local government authority.
Why Local Matters
When you get a roof replacement or roof repair, the roofing company should stand behind their work with some sort of workmanship warranty. If they leave when the storm damage repair work is complete, they won’t be around to honor your installation warranty. You should even think very carefully before considering a national company who sets up shop in your town. If they’re not profitable, they’ll leave and you won’t have anyone to call that’s local for your warranty coverage.
