We often think of home maintenance as yardwork and fresh paint. We like to think of it as the things you should be looking for and then doing when necessary any time of year. However, there are a few things that typically show themselves in the fall more than other times of the year. Walking around your home at least four times a year and ideally after every major storm helps you notice when something happens and address it sooner than you might have otherwise.
Your Gutters & Roofing System
Few of us perform any regular roof maintenance. However, if you have debris on your roof, get up there and clean it off. Likewise, you should make sure your gutters are clean after the leaves stop falling. If you have black streaks or mold growth on your gutters, shingles or other parts of your roofing system, use a 50/50 mixture of bleach and water in a garden sprayer to kill the growth. If you have actual moss or notice any damage, call your roofing company for an inspection before the temperatures drop and they have to wait to perform repair or a roof replacement.
Caulk Your Windows
When your window company installed your new windows (or the builder put them in) they caulked around the windows. Caulk ages in the heat and sun. When you don’t have that continuous bead of caulk, your home is at risk for water damage and air leakage. It’s easy to re-do and you can find lots of videos on how on YouTube.
Siding Check
No matter what type of siding you have, it should be properly affixed to your home. If you have wood siding, it should be properly sealed with paint or stain. While you’re checking your siding, also make sure that your landscaping hasn’t grown to the point it touches your home. That can lead to many issues including pest infestations.
Doors
Have you ever replaced the weather stripping around your doors? If you can slide a dollar bill into your home between your door and frame, you need new weather stripping. It’s easy probably the easiest of home maintenance tasks. It’s also one of the best things you can do if you notice cool air around your doors. Just be sure to take a piece of the existing weather stripping to your home improvement store so you get the right size and type for your doors.
