Whether you’re planning an exterior remodel with new roofing, window and siding installation, or just one or two, you need to plan for the contractors at your home. Although you aren’t required to be there the entire time for all projects, you likely want to be there at least at the start and finish of each project. Of course, the actual time it takes for the new installation varies based on materials and size of your home.
Roofing Installation
If you have contracted with a roofer for a roof replacement, typically the longest part of the project is waiting to get onto their schedule. Unless you’ve ordered specialty shingle that isn’t stocked at the various distributors, then you may be waiting on that. Most roofing companies deliver the shingles and other materials a few days prior to your scheduled installation date. Once the roofing installation begins, it generally takes one to two days depending on the size of your roof. Exceptions are when there is extensive roof repair to the roof deck or structure of the roof.
New Siding Installation
New siding installation takes longer than a roof replacement. On average with removal, addition of a house wrap to increase the home’s R-value and new siding installation, most homes take about seven days. Single story homes tend to take a bit less time while those with lots of dormers or angles take a bit more. And, if you choose an unfinished product like James Hardie unpainted siding, you need to add two or three days for the painter.
Window Replacement
If you are getting new windows, you have a fair amount of preparation to do before the installation. Most window companies ask that you remove all window treatments, clear away furnishings in front of the windows and remove any wall hangings on walls with windows. Any good window replacement company will only remove a few windows at a time. Once those are securely back in place, they’ll move on to the next area or room. Most window installations take no more than three days. Keep in mind that the lead time to get your custom windows ordered is anywhere from six weeks to three months.
What if the Same Company Handles All Three Projects?
There are several benefits to having one company handle the window, roofing and siding installation. However, a significantly shorter timeline isn’t one of them. You don’t want the roofers working while the siding or window installers are for safety reasons. And, in most cases if you replace your siding and windows together, the company removes the siding, then replaces the windows and then installs the new siding. Although some work can go on simultaneously, it won’t save that much time overall on the project.
