Now that the storm is out of our area, we’re hearing from many homeowners who suspect (or know) they have tropical storm damage to their roofs, siding and gutters. Thankfully, our area was spared some of the worst winds and flooding. However, there are still homes in the Triad with wind damage. If you even think that the 50mph wind gusts we saw throughout the Winston Salem area damaged your roof, gutters or siding, we can help.
Signs of Storm Damage
There are many signs that you may have storm damage. The easiest to spot is missing shingles. Along those same lines are bent or broken shingles. These can be harder for the average homeowner to identify. Often wind gusts blow the shingles up bending or cracking them and then, when the wind stops, the shingles lay back down. However, once they’re bent, the damage is done and they can no longer protect your home. Keep in mind that just because you noticed a roof leak during or after the rain, doesn’t always mean that it is tropical storm damage. You may have already had roof damage and with the prolonged rain the water could just be making it into your home.
What Not to Do
Don’t allow a roofing company who knocks on your door to handle your roofing inspection. All too often these “door knockers” as we refer to them, lack experience, insurance, and/or state licensing. When a weather event comes through an area, storm chasers arrive. Only trust a local, licensed roofing company with your tropical storm damage.
You also shouldn’t wait to call your roofer. During the aftermath of a storm the established and highly rated roofing companies book quickly. Just because your insurance company can’t come for several weeks doesn’t mean you can’t talk to a roofer about your suspected storm damage.
Things You Should Do
Call your insurance company and report that you believe your have tropical storm damage from Helene. They will start a claim and schedule an adjustor. Begin documenting all conversations and interactions with both the insurance company and the roofing company whom you choose. Take photos of any damage that you see inside and outside your home. Ask your roofer to place a tarp over any damaged area of your home so that they can prevent further water intrusion. This does not affect your insurance claim.
