Most roof damage in winter is caused by the freeze-thaw cycle. One small snowfall that slowly melts and refreezes each night takes it toll on your roofing system. However, you can prevent some of the roof damage that happens in our sometimes temperate and sometimes freezing Winston-Salem winters. Here’s how.

Clean Your Gutters

I know we preach this a lot. Clean gutters prevent many roofing issues including ice dams. Although ice dams aren’t a common reason people call us for Winston-Salem roof repair, it does happen at some point every time we have measurable snow. Clogged gutters prevent the water from the melted snow from exiting your gutter system. The water then freezes. As more snow melts, that block of ice in your gutters doesn’t thaw as quickly as the snow on your roof. Eventually the water overflows your gutters leading to icicles. And if you see icicles, you likely have an ice dam in your gutter. This leads to not only roof damage in winter, but also damage to your gutters, fascia and sometimes even windows and siding.

Check Your Insulation

One of the reasons ice dams form is due to insufficient insulation. Insufficient insulation allows the heat from your home to escape into your attic raising the temperature to above freezing, which melts the snow on the roof. If you notice that part of your roof has melted snow and neighbors’ roofs which face the same general direction still has snow, you may have an area with insufficient insulation. Of course, you can also look in your attic and see if you have damaged or missing insulation. Check this link to see how much of each kind of insulation you should have and add the right amount to your attic. You’ll also see the benefit of lower heating costs.

Have Regular Roofing Inspections

Proper roof maintenance helps prevent roof damage in winter, spring, summer, and fall. We recommend one a year for an older roof or every other year for a roof less than about 5-8 years old. Roofing inspections can identify loose shingles, ensure your gutters have good alignment and are attached to your home and attend to things like deteriorating caulk on your flashing. If you’ve never had a roofing inspection, it’s time to call your local roofing company
