Now that it’s officially fall and the weather is beginning to cool down, it’s the perfect time to take care of some siding and window maintenance. Although there are some things you want to leave to the professionals, most window and siding maintenance is something you can do yourself with just a few tools.
Siding Maintenance
If you have aluminum, vinyl or fiber cement siding, you should be cleaning your siding at least once a year. Removing mildew and dirt helps prevent staining. Usually a light pressure wash is all that it takes. Occasionally, you’ll need to scrub more stubborn areas. Avoid spraying upward against the siding which can accidentally dislodge siding or lead to water in your home. About every 10 – 15 years fiber cement siding will need to be repainted. Wood siding needs more frequent painting or staining. Also make sure your siding is well-affixed to your home. If it isn’t, call your siding company for repair.
Window Maintenance
Clean windows aren’t just for looks. Clean windows allow more natural light into your home. And, as the days are shorter, a little more light can improve your mood and energy. When cleaning the windows, also clean the screens and replace or repair any that are torn. About every five years you’ll need to re-caulk around your windows. If you notice that your caulk is broken, bubbling or peeling, take care of it now while it’s cooler but not cold. That will give your caulk time to cure before freezing temperatures arrive. You don’t want a window leak which can lead to damaged floors, drywall and molding not to mention ruined insulation in your walls.
How Do You Know Your Siding or Windows Need Replacing?
If your siding company says they can’t re-affix your siding or yours has significant damage, it’s time for new siding. Other signs include a drafty home or warped wood siding. If your drafts are from your windows, consider replacing them. If they don’t open or stay open you might want to talk to your window company about new windows too. And, if you need both, consider replacing them at the same time as you’ll save time and money.
