Although it seems that the worst of Hurricane Florence is going to head a bit south of us, that doesn’t mean we’re not going to see the effects of wind and rain in the Greensboro area. With tropical storm force winds more than 200 miles from the center of the storm and rain expected to cover the state, we could get 6” or more of rain. Anytime we see a wind and rain event, we end up hearing form many home owners about roof leaks. Although many roof leaks after a hurricane or tropical storm are storm damage related, some are simply from an aging roof.
The first thing you want to do if you think you’ve experienced storm damage is contact your insurance company. They’ll schedule an adjustor to come to your home to evaluate the damage. While you’re waiting for that appointment, call your local roofer and schedule an inspection. Your local roofer will be able to provide you with an estimate for the roof repair or recommend a replacement. They can also offer their opinion as to whether the issue was the result of storm damage or just age. If they arrive before the adjustor and you find that the adjustor doesn’t agree with the finding of your local roofer, set up a meeting between the two so the roofer can explain what they’re seeing.
Choosing the Right Local Roofer
The first key is to keep it local. There’s no reason to accept an estimate from someone who sets up shop temporarily from another state to take advantage of the storm damage claims. You want your roofing company to be around to honor their installation warranty long after all the storm damage repair is complete.
Check that they’re licensed and insured. Only a licensed roofer knows the proper permitting requirements for the area and can pull it. Depending on the type and extent of the work, you may be subject to a fine if your roofer doesn’t get a permit. Insurance protects you should someone be injured or something gets damaged by the roofing company. Protect yourself, ask for proof of insurance.
