We’ve had a few cool days which means that fall is coming. Reading your home for the changing season is an often-overlooked task. And, although we’re entering a dryer season, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be taking care to ensure that your roof is in good condition. If you haven’t already, start with a roof inspection.
Why a Roof Inspection?
Most homeowners mistakenly assume that they’ll know when they have a roof leak or when there’s something wrong. However, by the time most homeowners notice that there’s a leak, they have significant damage to their roofing structure, insulation, drywall and more. A roof inspection by a professional roofing company can identify trouble spots and perform preventative maintenance. They can also fix small leaks before they lead to big problems. If your roof is over ten years old, you may want to ask the roofing company about its life expectancy. By doing this, you’ll have a good idea of when you’ll need to budget for a new roof.
My Roof is Fine, What Else Should I Do?
If you had a recent roof inspection and your roofing company took care of any issues or deemed your roof in good condition, you still have a few things you should do. First, do make sure that your gutters are clear. Birds who made nests in your gutters are now gone so it is safe to remove the nests and anything else that could clog them. Also remove any debris from your roof that’s already fallen. Of course, once the leaves are off the trees, you’ll want to clean your gutters again.
Also, inspect your insulation. You may even want to measure it and make sure you have sufficient insulation throughout your attic. Being under insulated can cost you in heating costs as the temperatures drop. Remember the Importance of a Visual Roofing Inspection
After every storm or weather event you should walk around your home and visually inspect it. That includes the roof, siding and windows. By doing this you will be able to protect your home by taking care of minor damage before you end up with a big repair bill.
