Although we talk a lot about signs you need a new roof or that you have roof damage or a possible roof leak, not all leaks are visible. However, knowing your home and taking note and action when you notice something different in your home helps prevent extensive and costly damage. To a trained roofer, these signs are easy to spot. Homeowners, however, don’t instantly think they have an issue with their roof when they notice one of these.
Water Damage Inside Your Home
If you walk into a room after a rain and notice water around your window you, like most people, would assume that their window has a leak. And, that may be true. However, sometimes it’s a roof leak. Water follows the path of least resistance, which means it may come in somewhere on your roof and run down the wall until it finds a place to escape. Window frames and under baseboards are frequent places water shows itself. The only way to determine where the water originated is to have a professional inspection.
Bubbling or Peeling Paint
Sometimes the leak is small and you never actually see water but your paint starts to mysteriously bubble. If you notice this in your walls or ceiling, you might have a roof leak. If it’s not your roof, it may be your siding or fascia. Paint bubbles when the drywall becomes moist. A roof repair company can repair or replace your roof or fascia if they determine that is the issue. If your leak is from old or bad siding, you might need new siding it if it can’t be repaired.
Compressed Insulation
We don’t go in our attics nearly as often as we should. However, if you do go up there and notice compressed insulation, it’s not likely because someone was walking on it. You probably have a roof leak. Look for dark staining on the roof deck (the wood on which your roof sits). When your insulation is compressed from water, it becomes useless, so not only will you need roof repair, but also new insulation in that area. If you don’t see any other signs of a roof leak, check to see if that insulation is near a duct, ventilation fan or another potential source of moisture and get it addressed. If you’re in doubt, call your roof repair company and have them provide you with a professional inspection.
