Although new windows aren’t usually as much as a new roof, they are an investment. And, if you’re like most homeowners, you want to know that the ROI of replacement windows really is. That will vary depending on the market, neighborhood and the windows you choose. Zonda Media puts together a Cost vs. Value report nationally for various home improvement projects including replacement windows. We’re using data from the 2024 report for the Greensboro area since that is the geographical area they surveyed that is closest to us.
Vinyl Vs. Aluminum Clad Wood Windows
The report compares replacing 10 of each type of window with dimensions of approximately 3’X5’. For the total job cost, you’re looking at about $24,000 for aluminum clad windows and close to $20,000 for vinyl. Surprisingly to many, the ROI of replacement windows made of vinyl is higher at 65% while clad windows only bring in about a 55% return. This is assuming you choose ENERGY STAR® rated windows for your area.
Other Considerations
Some historic areas have architectural review committees that require that you maintain the look of your home in keeping with its history. If you live in one of those areas, you will likely need to choose wood clad windows. If maintenance is a concern, vinyl may be the best option for you. Of course, historical accuracy, maintenance and ROI of replacement windows shouldn’t be the only things you consider before buying new windows. Also look at what local and federal tax credits are available for the ENERGY STAR® rated windows you choose.
