Hopefully winter is really over and we can begin to spend some time outside. As you start to put together your spring cleaning checklist, don’t forget the exterior of your home. If your home has siding, you want to do a check to make sure it’s still in good condition and then clean it.
Over the past few months we’ve had several storms with strong winds. Early in the year we had extremely cold temperatures not normally seen here. Both can take a toll on siding. As you walk around your home, look for cracks in the siding and make sure it’s still firmly attached. You want to do this before you clean it because if water gets in the holes or behind improperly affixed siding, it can cause further damage to your home. If you notice either of these issues, contact your siding company as soon as possible.
Cleaning Your Siding
One of the benefits of vinyl siding is that it’s low maintenance. Low doesn’t mean no maintenance. It’s best to clean your siding once or twice a year as needed. Some areas of your home in the shade may need cleaning more often. Mold grows in dark damp places so areas behind shrubbery or in the shade all day may need a touch up in the summer.
If you have the manufacturer’s information, check their recommendations about cleaning. If not, use a soft bristle scrub brush and a 50/50 vinegar and water mix. You can also use dish soap mixed with warm water. If you have a pressure washer, it can be an easy way to spray away dirt and grime. Be sure to rinse whatever you use to clean the siding well and any landscaping that the cleaning solution may have fallen on.
