The Triad isn’t prime territory for hurricanes but we get our fair share of strong storms every summer. The strong winds, hail, and driving rain can cause storm damage to your roof. If you haven’t had your roof inspected since before last summer, consider calling a professional roofing company for a roof inspection before storm season starts.
Signs You Need Roof Repair
A good roofing company will look at all aspects of your roofing system. Here are some signs that you need a roof inspection and likely a roof repair prior to storm season:
- Curled, missing, or loose shingles – If you notice any of these from the ground, you shouldn’t hesitate, this alone is enough of a reason to call a roofing company for an inspection.
- Gutters that pull away from the house – Gutters should be securely attached to the home so the water runs into them and down and away from your foundation. If yours aren’t affixed properly it could be a sign that they need to be cleaned or that your fascia board is deteriorating.
- Light in the attic – You should go into your attic several different times of day and see if when the sun is shining on any part of your roof you see light coming through. If sunlight comes through, rain can too.
Things You Can do to Prevent Storm Damage
If your roof has been inspected and it’s in good shape, there are a few things you should do to help prevent summer storm damage. First, make sure your gutters are clean. Clogged gutters back water up to the edge of your roof and can bend your shingles or if they sit in the water cause the edges to deteriorate faster than they should. Secondly, trim trees and shrubs close to your home. You don’t want a branch rubbing on your roof as that will remove the granules from the shingles. Also, a tree limb that overhangs your home may snap off and cause roof damage in a strong storm.
