If you’re getting a new roof, chances are good that you’re choosing asphalt shingles. Shingles are the most common roofing type in our area. And, when you begin your search for a roofer, you’ll quickly find there are many asphalt shingle installers serving the Triad. Choosing the right shingles and the right roofing company for installation both matter.
Two Main Asphalt Shingle Categories
There are two main types of asphalt shingles; 3-tab and architectural. Architectural shingles from some manufacturers also have a subgroup generally referred to as designer shingles. However, for comparison purposes, we’re going to stick with 3-tab and architectural shingles. Both will protect your home from the elements. You’ll find that in most brands, your have fewer color options when choosing 3-tab shingles. Architectural shingles also have many more features than 3-tab shingles. On average, the life expectancy of an architectural shingle is about twice that of a 3-tab. And, because they are heavier and include more features, they often have a higher wind rating and impact rating than their counterparts. The majority of asphalt shingle installers recommend architectural shingles over 3-tab in almost all instances.
Things to Ask Prospective Asphalt Shingle Installers
Not all roofing companies are the same. Asking the right questions will help you choose the right asphalt shingle installers for your new roof.
- Are you certified by the manufacturer? Knowing if they are GAF Master Elite or CertainTeed Shingle Masters will help you know if they will follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and best practices for the installation.
- Do you use nail guns or hand nail during installation? Although using a nail gun as asphalt shingle installers is a highly accepted practice, it’s not the best installation method. Nail gun pressure can blow through shingles and installers often go so quickly they miss the nail zone or fail to put the right number of nails in each shingle strip. When possible opt for asphalt shingle installers who hand nail.
- What products will you use with my new shingle installation? The best answer to this depends on the brand shingles you choose. You want the roofing company to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. This matters because in the event there is a manufacturing issue with your shingles, your claim could be denied if the installer failed to use the right accompanying materials.
