We’ve written blogs before about your roofing system and understanding what the different parts of your roof are, and how they work. We’ve never really explained all the elements of your roof replacement and why it’s more than just installing new shingles. To help you understand what makes up the entire roof and, in many cases, the cost of a roof replacement we thought we’d share these six pieces that work together.
- Roof Deck – The wood on your roof’s structure is the roof deck. Most roof decks are plywood, although some older homes may have 1X6’s. When we tear off the old shingles, we inspect the roof deck. Often some part of the decking need replacing. Without a sound roof deck, your roof replacement won’t last it’s expected life.
- Underlayment – You may have heard the term felt paper and that is the traditional material used although synthetic underlayment has grown in popularity because of its increased strength over felt paper. The purpose is two-fold, first, to protect the shingles from the sap in the roof deck, and secondly, to provide an extra layer of water protection to the roof’s entire surface.
- Starter Shingles – If you look closely at architectural shingles, you’ll notice that they aren’t flat. This is why they’re also sometimes referred to as dimensional shingles. Because they aren’t flat, a starter strip is laid at your roof’s edge to ensure that it is sealed from water coming up underneath.
- Flashing – This water and ice barrier helps water flow down your roof and into your gutters. Flashing is installed around roof protrusions like chimneys, vents, and skylights as well as in valleys down the roof.
- Vents – Although most roof replacements don’t require replacing vents on your roof, if your roof has older box vents or wind turbines that have lived their recommended life, this is a good time to replace them. The other vents that are part of your roof are your soffits around the edge. These rarely need to be replaced. The reason you want good ventilation is so that your roof can breathe which reduces moisture build up in your attic and helps your home not overheat in the summer.
- Hip and Ridge Shingles – The finishing touch of your roof are the shingles that go on the peak of your roof and any other ridges on the roof. These are different shingles made in the proper shape so that your roof not only looks great but is well protected.
