Our area got some light snow this past week. It could have been much more had the storm shifted slightly. Or, if the temperatures were different, we have dealt with anything from a rain/snow mix to freezing rain or sleet. And, any existing roof damage would be exacerbated by the freeze-thaw cycle we’re experiencing. In fact, if you have any holes in your roof with water, those holes could be growing every day. Freeze-thaw cycles are a main cause of winter roof damage. Here’s what to look for.
Compressed Insulation
When you put your holiday decorations in the attic did you look at your insulation? If you didn’t, you may want to go back and look at your insulation. Although this technically isn’t winter roof damage, it’s likely a sign that you have a roof leak. When water hits insulation, it compresses. It also loses its effectiveness. You can replace the insulation, but you should call a roofing company first to have them find the source of the leak and repair it.
Granules in Your Downspouts & Gutters
When the freeze-thaw cycle happens and your roof has even a little snow or ice on it, granules become dislodged. Some granule loss is ok, but if you see a significant amount coming out of your downspouts, your shingles may need replacing. This happens most often to older roofs close to the end of their life expectancy. Ask your roofing company to evaluate your roof. If you do have a new roof, expect some shedding in the first few rainstorms, but it should stop shortly thereafter.
Dented or Pitted Shingles
You may think that hail is the only thing that can dent a shingle. However, sleet and ice storms in winter can lead to pitting and denting occasionally. When this happens, it’s most often accompanied by granule loss. This type of winter roof damage is difficult to see from the ground and by a novice, so talk to your roofing company if you think you’ve sustained any damage.
