In our two-part blog series about choosing the right shingle style and color for your home, we’re going to look at the most common shingle styles and how to choose the right color for your roof replacement. In this week’s blog, we’ll focus on the different styles of asphalt shingle. We’re not going to focus on any specific manufacture as most offer similar styles but may have different names for them.
The best shingle for your home will depend on a few things. Your budget is often the biggest. If you live in an HOA controlled community, they may mandate a specific style (and possibly even a color) so be sure to check into that before contacting a roofing company. Last is the style of your home. You want your shingles to compliment the rest of the home not stand out as an uncoordinated element.
3-Tab Shingles
These are the most budget friendly roof replacement option. If you have a home with a roof more than 15 years old, chances are good that you have 3-tab shingles. They are flat and one dimensional. Of all the shingles available today, they have the shortest expected life, typically 15-20 years. All manufacturers offer these basic shingles and call them 3-tab shingles. Most offer a wide variety of colors.
Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles cover a wide range of shingles and are also known as laminate shingles or dimensional shingles. Every manufacturer has different lines with different features. When you look at one of these shingles, you’ll notice that they have different size and shaped tabs making them look dimensional. If you pick up a strip of laminate shingles and 3tab shingles, you’ll notice that the laminate ones are considerable heavier. These shingles last longer, on average 25-30 years with good maintenance, and provide more protection for your home. Because of the better look, higher quality manufacturing process, and longer warranties, these shingles always cost more than 3-tab shingles.
Designer Shingles
Every manufacturer has a different name for these shingles but they are, for all practical purposes, architectural shingles. What makes them different, and more expensive is the cut and styles. For example, some manufacturers offer a scalloped shingle for Victorian style homes. Others offer a diamond cut for home owners who want an exceptional look on their roof.
