You probably started looking at replacement windows because your old windows were drafty or wouldn’t open or close properly. New windows are an investment in your home. When you make this sort of investment, you want already know the basics of getting quotes from several window installation companies and checking out their reputation, but what else should you know? Here are some things you should consider so that you really love your replacement windows.
Choose the Right Window Style
Your current windows are likely single hung windows. That means that you can only open the bottom sash. Talk to the window installation companies giving you quotes about double-hung windows that open from both the bottom and the top and tilt in for easy cleaning. Other popular options are casement windows that use a hand crank to open and sliding windows which operate just like a sliding door. You may find that a different window style is more to your liking than what you currently have.
Understand What You’re Getting
Because of the NFRC label that’s on every window, you can compare apples to apples. When you’re talking to the window replacement companies about their windows, ask to see the NFRC ratings. Look at each one’s U-factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient and even the Visible Transmittance and Air Leakage to compare different options. This will help you make sure that the windows from one company are as energy efficient as those from the competitor. If you’re unfamiliar with those labels, click here.
Choose Frame Color, Grid and Glass Options You Want
Although color and pattern names vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, you should choose what you love not just what the sales rep pushes (probably because of a sales promotion). Depending on the manufacturer, you may have window frames that are different colors for the interior and exterior. This may be very important if you choose a bold exterior color but want white for your interior. Be sure to clarify with your window company what you’d be getting for the price quoted as sometimes having different interior and exterior colors is an upcharge.
The same goes for grid and glass options. Almost all replacement window companies offer two and three pane windows with different grid options but depending what you choose the final cost of each window may vary. Choose a glass option that fits your budget and a grid option that suits your home’s style.
