Now that you’ve looked at some of the ways you can make your home more energy efficient yourself, we have some ideas that we can help with. (If you missed part one, click here.) As an exterior remodeling company, we speak with homeowners every day about how today’s building codes differ from those 15 and 20 years ago. They are often surprised to learn that their windows and siding likely don’t meet today’s energy standards. It’s also possible that your roof’s energy efficiency could be improved. Here’s what you need to know before you undertake and exterior remodel.

Are Your Siding Is Likely Not Insulated

Although there is insulated siding available, most siding today is installed with a whole home wrap beneath it. This gives your home better protection against not only heat and cold, but also insulates it better against outside noise. Also, old metal siding absorbs the sun’s heat much more than today’s vinyl or fiber cement siding. New siding along with insulation beneath it can improve energy efficiency.

Are Your Windows Energy Efficient?

If your windows are single pane glass, they’re not. Although double pane windows offer slightly more insulation than single pane, if they’re also not Low-E glass, you’re still not close to today’s ENERGY STAR® standards for windows. There are several ways you can test if your windows are Low-E glass if you don’t know the make and model. However, if you feel the outside coming through your windows, new ones will make your home more comfortable and energy efficient. And when you choose the same exterior remodeling company for your window and siding replacement, you will save money.

Dark Roofing Doesn’t Help Cooling Costs

If your roof is nearing 15 years old, you may already be looking at a roof replacement. As you do, consider a lighter color architectural shingle rather than a dark 3-tab shingle. Architectural shingles are thicker and provide better insulation against heat loss than 3-tab. Lighter color shingles reflect more of the sun’s UV rays which can reduce cooling costs. Put them together and you have a more energy efficient home year-round.
