Since we’re focusing on energy efficient homes this month, we’re going to look at ways to know whether you have energy efficient windows today. If you recently bought the home you’re in, you may have little detail about the windows and whether they’re energy efficient or not. Here are a few things you can do to tell.

What Makes a Window Energy Efficient?

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) evaluates all windows on their energy efficiency. They look at four things. First, U-Factor which details how insulative a window is. Next, solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which is how much heat gets in or escapes through the windows. Finally, air leakage and visible transmittance (how much light comes through the window). U-factor, SHGC and air leakage are relevant factors for energy efficient windows. The U.S. is split into zones and a window many be ENERGY STAR® rated for one region but not for another based on the results of the testing. The factors that make up an energy efficient window include dual or triple pane glass, Low-E glass, insulated frames and sashes and how well manufactured the window itself is.

How to Check Your Windows

Most homeowners know if they have multiple panes of glass in their windows. It’s easy to look at them and make that determination. However, Low-E glass can’t be seen with the naked eye. You can easily check with just a match or lighter. Assuming you have dual pane glass, all you need to do is light the match or lighter and hold it up to the window. If it reflects back 4 identical looking flames, you don’t have Low-E glass coating. (Triple pane windows will reflect back 6). If you see one flame that looks different, usually clearer and brighter but sometimes a slightly different color, you do have Low-E glass windows. If you don’t have multiple panes and Low-E glass, you don’t have energy efficient windows.
