You may not think of the gently falling snow as something that damages your roof. And you’re right. Winter storm damage is rarely from falling snow. Winter weather becomes dangerous to your roofing system most often in two instances; when there’s too much wet snow and when the temperature changes. And, even though we’re approaching the warmest time of the year, knowing how winter weather can damage your roof and what to look for is a good any time of year.

Winter Storm Damage Doesn’t Only Come from Snow

You may be thinking back to this past winter and remembering that we didn’t have any measurable snow. That was the first time since the early 90’s that this area didn’t have a measurable snowfall. However, it’s not only the snow that leads to roof damage in winter. The damage we see more often is from the freeze thaw cycles that we see multiple times every winter. What happens is that we have rain or even snow flurries. Then the temperature drops below freezing and the water on your roof freezes. If you have even the smallest hole in a shingle and there’s water in it that freezes, that hole can get just a little bigger. Over multiple freeze-thaw events, the hole continues to grow. Eventually, you have a roof leak.

Ice Dams Also Lead to Problems

Gutter covers are big business for good reason. That’s because they help prevent issues like ice dams. When you see pretty icicles hanging over a gutter, it’s a sign that the gutter is clogged. When clogged, the water can’t drain which means when it freezes, it has nowhere to go and backs up onto the roof. This is one of the biggest causes of winter storm damage. If you notice broken or lifted shingles at the roof’s edge, you likely have roof damage. Once that happens, water can begin to leak into your home. Although snow melting and refreezing most often causes ice dams, the same damage can happen after multiple rain events too.
