We’ve been one of Clemmons’ and Winston-Salem’s leading local roofers for 30 years and never in our history have we seen such an influx of new roofing companies. Some of them are likely experienced, trustworthy and will prove to be quality installers. However, many more will be out of business or out of the area more quickly than you realize. And, those who will be gone sooner rather than later give some warning signs they won’t be around long-term. Here are a few…
They Ask for a Payment Up Front
If the local roofers you’re considering for your roof replacement ask for a payment up front for the job, they’re either very short on cash or scammers. Previously we’ve warned about the roofing gypsies who come after a storm, give estimates and then disappear. That is one scenario. However, there are also times when newer roofing companies collect funds from future clients, schedule them and between the time they collect the money and when they were supposed to do the installation, they go out of business.
No Industry Accreditation
Rarely does a roofing company offer all brands of shingles. Most roofing professionals have a few brands they prefer working with. They then take the time to earn some level of accreditation with those manufacturers. When you choose roofers with accreditation like GAF Certified® or Master Elite® or CertainTeed’s SHINGLEMASTER™ badges, they have taken the time to invest in their company so they have the skills and knowledge to properly install your roof. You may be eligible for a better warranty when you choose a manufacturer accredited roofer.
Conflicting Signage
If you look at the truck and it has a magnet on the side that has their business name and local phone number but a license plate from Virginia, Tennessee or South Carolina, they’re not really local roofers. They may be in the area to see if opening an office here is worth their investment. However, if they find that it is not and they leave, what happens to your roof replacement workmanship warranty? One way to see if they are truly local roofers is to go to the Better Business Bureau and see if they have a local listing, how long they’ve been here and what their rating is. Don’t be duped by an out of town roofing company posing as a local one.
